autobiography of Cyril Hawkins, 2 handwritten biographical sketches written for the McConnelsville Herald, 1 handwritten copy
of a proposed bill in Ohio concerning elevator safety, 5 envelopes, 9 clipped out signatures, 1 small handwritten card, 1
handwritten petition to Abraham Lincoln recommending he appoint Frank Hildreth as a Midshipman in the Navy, dated February
27, 1865, and signed by numerous Nevada politicians, and 1 handwritten fictional story (10 pages, undated) titled, "Remarkable
stories of two doctors." Most of the materials were the property of Cyril Hawkins. Eleven of the letters are from Cyril to
his father, William Hawkins of McConnelsville, Ohio. Five of the letters are from Cyril's brother, Austin Hawkins, also addressed
to their father. The fictional account of two doctors discussing their most unusual cases includes a story about an experimental
brain operation that involves the transfer of brain tissue between a "mulatto slave" boy and girl to change their sex. The
operation results in the boy becoming completely female, marrying, and having five children. The girl is unaffected by the
operation and remains female. Includes a typescript summary of the contents with biographical information and excerpts

Cyril Hawkins (May 6, 1832-June 21, 1902) was born in McConnelsville, Ohio. He was the younger son of Colonel William Hawkins
(1796-1868), a Democratic politician from Ohio who served in the Ohio state senate. Cyril traveled to California in 1851 and
worked as a gold miner, sign painter, grocery clerk and civil servant, including as a clerk for the California Secretary of
State. Hawkins returned to Ohio via Panama in March, 1865 and died in McConnelsville in 1902. In California, he followed his
father's footsteps into politics, working his way up the ranks in the new Republican Party, eventually serving in the first
state legislature of Nevada, as a clerk in the U.S. House of Representatives, a customs agent in Niagara Falls, and as a presidential
elector from Ohio in 1896.
Austin Hawkins (September 21, 1825-March 4,1908) was a California '49er and in the late 1860s served as the County Clerk for
Siskiyou County, California. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Yreka, California.
